Introduction and Personal Statement

Introduction:

My name is Gurman Kang, and I’m a proud Kamloops native with a deep-seated passion for communication and a interest in the growth of the Punjabi music industry. My journey through Thompson Rivers University’s Bachelor of Communications and Digital Journalism program has equipped me with a robust skillset, fostering my ability to connect, engage, explore, and understand the intricate interplay between local and global perspectives. My experiences, from building a thriving online music community to coaching youth basketball and navigating the diverse interactions of a taxi driver, have shaped my unique approach to communication. This portfolio reflects my dedication to these principles and my aspiration to contribute meaningfully to the Punjabi music industry, whether through podcasting, public relations, or potentially, the legal field.

Personal Statement:

My career aspirations are multifaceted, driven by a desire to explore the vibrant world of Punjabi music and contribute to its growth. I envision myself creating a compelling podcast that delves into the behind-the-scenes stories of artists, exploring their creative processes and mindsets. Simultaneously, I aim to leverage my communication skills as a public relations or communications specialist within a record label, live entertainment company, or digital streaming platform. Should my path diverge, I’m also committed to pursuing law school, specializing in either family law or copyright, where I can apply my analytical and communication skills to serve my community or protect creative works.

These goals are deeply rooted in the learning outcomes fostered by my experiences at TRU. Connection, a cornerstone of my education, is evident in my ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. My coursework, like professional writing, refined my ability to tailor messages for specific audiences, understanding the nuances of tone and delivery. Teamwork, cultivated through collaborative projects like the organizational communication blind drawing game, and my coaching experience with Grade 8 basketball, has reinforced the importance of clear communication and shared goals. Working with my 3 other friends to coach the team, then communicating with the kids and parents helped build my connection skills.

Engagement, encompassing social responsibility and lifelong learning, has shaped my understanding of the media’s impact and the importance of critical thinking. Classes like Introduction to Politics and Migration and Transnationalism expanded my worldview, providing insights into government structures and the complexities of migration. I understood the importance of fact checking and how mass media can falsely potray something. My commitment to lifelong learning is reflected in my desire to continuously expand my knowledge and adapt to evolving industries.

Exploration, centered on knowledge, critical thinking, and investigation, has been integral to my academic and personal growth. My research on Sikh migration, analyzing its motivations and impact, and my PR campaign for Kami Cabs, demonstrated my ability to conduct thorough investigations and apply critical thinking to real-world scenarios. My drive to explore the intricacies of the Punjabi music industry stems from this inherent curiosity and analytical approach.

Finally, Local-to-Global awareness has broadened my understanding of intercultural dynamics and the interconnectedness of communities. Studying the conditions of migrant workers in Canada and exploring Indigenous knowledges and ways has fostered a deep appreciation for diversity and social justice. This awareness is crucial as I aim to navigate the global reach of the Punjabi music industry.

My diverse experiences, from building an online music community that attracted major artists to coaching young athletes and engaging with diverse individuals as a taxi driver, have honed my ability to adapt and connect with people from all walks of life. These experiences reflect my pursuit of TRU’s learning outcomes and demonstrate my readiness to tackle new challenges in the dynamic fields of music and communication. My ability to blend academic achievement, digital media savvy, community involvement, and real-world communication skills makes me a unique and adaptable candidate.
